Thalwil, Switzerland, January 13, 2011 – Designed for small, low-power, low cost applications, u‑blox’ latest GPS single-chip UBX-G6010-NT delivers the industry-leading positioning performance of u‑blox 6 technology in a micro-miniature package: only 5 x 6 x 1.1 mm. Its high-level of integration means a complete, stand-alone GPS system design can now fit on a PCB area smaller than the size of a thumbtack. The chip requires no external host.

“Our smallest GPS chip addresses the worldwide market demand for ever-smaller GPS devices. Global positioning is increasingly being integrated into devices such as cameras, smartphones as well as assets and goods. The UBX-G6010-NT is the perfect solution for these types of small, cost-sensitive, mass-market applications”, said Thomas Nigg, VP Product Marketing at u‑blox.

The UBX‑G6010-NT provides high sensitivity, down to -162 dBm or -148 dBm during coldstart, and fast acquisition times. Sophisticated RF-architecture and interference suppression ensures maximum performance even in GPS-hostile environments.

UBX‑G6010-NT minimizes PCB area to less than 7 x 8 mm for a complete standalone GPS receiver. With most passive components integrated, the total system BOM requires as few as 5 external components including SAW filter and TCXO. An LDO and LNA are integrated and costly external memory is not needed. Lower price GPS crystals as well as TCXOs are supported. 2-layer PCB integration capability and small footprint ensures further cost savings.

Designed for low power consumption, the chip includes breakthrough intelligent power management to support low-power applications. The chip operates from -40° C to 85° C.

The chip is already designed-in at lead customers, and production ramp-up is imminent. Design-in is supported by u‑blox’ CDK-6X development kit. For more details about the UBX-G6010-NT, visit the u‑blox product webpage, or contact the u‑blox sales representative nearest you.
