u-blox launches universal UMTS/HSPA+ wireless module
6‑band LISA‑U2 modem series supports all global WCDMA standards in compact form factor
LISA‑U2 UMTS high‑speed wireless module supports all global standards in the world’s smallest form factor
Thalwil, Switzerland - Feb. 27, 2012 - u‑blox, the Swiss positioning and wireless chip and module company, introduces the world’s first multi‑standard “one size fits all” UMTS module. The ultra compact LISA‑U2 SMT modem series supports all global UMTS standards, enabling high‑speed voice and Internet access for wireless terminals designed for use anywhere in the world.
“The LISA‑U2 series is a groundbreaking solution for our global customers, significantly simplifying their design, purchasing and logistics” said Thomas Seiler, u‑blox CEO, “It is the most advanced and cost‑effective wireless communications solution for M2M terminals, automotive and consumer electronics designed for multi‑region deployment.”
The modem is targeted at machine‑to machine solutions like security systems, fixed wireless terminals and metering, as well as automotive applications such as in‑car infotainment, connected navigation, emergency call, fleet management, and anti‑theft systems. Other applications include mobile Internet terminals, tablet computers and personal tracking devices.
By supporting worldwide WCDMA standards, the LISA‑U2 series simplifies development and logistics; equipment makers can create wireless terminals that work everywhere on the globe based on a single design. Seamless interoperation with u‑blox GPS receivers is also built‑in.
The LISA form factor enables easy manufacturing, and migration from u‑blox’ LEON GSM/GPRS and LISA‑U1 modules. Support for A‑GPS and u‑blox’ unique CellLocateTM positioning technology is embedded to facilitate advanced telematics applications including indoor positioning. Features include compatibility with quad‑band GPRS/EDGE, low power (idle mode 1.5 mA) and operating temperature -40 to +85 deg. C.
An extensive set of national regulatory and operator certificates is available including PTCRB and AT&T. RIL software for Android and Embedded Windows is available free of charge.
LISA‑U2 modules are manufactured in ISO/TS 16949 certified sites. Each module is intensively inspected and tested during production. The modules are fully qualified according to ISO 16750 - Environmental conditions and electrical testing for electrical and electronic equipment for road vehicles to provide high durability and reliability.
