SkyWave and u-blox to Bring Benefits of Highly Accurate and Cost-Effective GPS Capabilities to Global Asset Tracking and Control

Ottawa, Canada and Herndon, Va. - October 5, 2004 - SkyWave Mobile Communications and u-blox today announced that SkyWave has incorporated cost-effective and highly accurate Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver modules from u-blox into its SkyWave DMR200 satellite terminals. The combined functionality will enable companies to effectively track, monitor and control fixed and mobile assets for marine, land and defense applications.

SkyWave's Inmarsat D+ satellite terminal solutions are used in the marine, land mobile, fixed site, government, and defense markets and are deployed in some of the world's most rugged environments. Precise, GPS-based location capabilities are a cornerstone of SkyWave's advanced two-way monitoring and control offerings such as asset intelligence collection, exception reporting and remote vehicle control. Typical customer applications include remote management of trucks, shipboard security alert systems and tuna fishing buoy sensors. To provide very rapid location fixes necessary for these applications, SkyWave uses the u-blox TIM-LP and TIM-LC 16 channel GPS modules that are accurate to distances of less than two meters. Additionally, the u-blox GPS modules have the benefit of low power consumption which is critical for the deployment of SkyWave terminals to track, monitor, and control remote, mobile assets which typically do not have high-capacity or easily rechargeable power supplies.
