Thalwil, Switzerland, 15th October 2002 - u-blox, a provider of GPS based positioning technology, widens its product range with SAM, a GPS smart antenna module. This complete receiver with integrated antenna makes fast and easy integration possible, and speeds up customer's design cycles.
The SAM smart antenna module is a complete GPS receiver with an integrated ceramic patch antenna. Based on the u-blox macro-component TIM the SAM smart antenna module provides excellent GPS performance in a very small sized package.
Operating at a nominal operating voltage of 3.3 Volts, the module consumes less than 0.5 Watts at a 1 Hz position update rate. Advanced low power modes allow for a considerable reduction of power consumption in applications where power consumption is of primary concern. A serial interface and power are all that is required for interfacing with the SAM GPS smart antenna.
A firmware upgrade adds datalogging functionality to the SAM. This firmware uses the internal FLASH memory to store up to 100'000 positions. Position, velocity and time are stored according to user-defined event criteria such as time or distance. This upgrade is free of cost.
Position information is key to many portable applications, such as mobile payment terminals and portable tracking devices. In such applications the GPS receiver and the GPS antenna are integrated into the device. The integration of a passive antenna and a GPS receiver is not a straight-forward excercise and adds significant risk to a project. With the SAM smart antenna module u-blox offers a ready to go solution and supports reduced time to market.
u-blox is a company operating internationally with headquarters in Switzerland and subsidiaries in Germany, UK, USA and Hong Kong. Since its foundation in 1997, u-blox has delivered more than 500'000 GPS receivers worldwide.
SAM is available immediately. For further information and contacts, please refer to our homepage www.u-blox.com.
