TIM-LR Sensor-Based GPS Receiver for Dead Reckoning Positioning.

Thalwil, Switzerland, 3. March 2004 - u-blox, a provider of GPS based positioning technology, has added the TIM-LR GPS receiver macro component to its product portfolio of sensor-based GPS receivers. The new product enables fully functional dead reckoning solutions on a small footprint.

The u-blox sensor-based GPS Receiver Macro-Component TIM-LR containing the ANTARIS® GPS positioning engine provides full dead reckoning functionality with a footprint of 1 square inch (25.4 x 25.4 mm) only. This new method of system integration allows a highly compact GPS solution with dead reckoning, using signals from a turn rate sensor (gyroscope) and odometer pulses. TIM-LR provides reliable and uninterrupted navigation performance under dynamic conditions in the most difficult urban areas with severe obstructions of the sky view, for example urban canyons between high-rise buildings, tunnels, underpasses, parkways with dense foliage, parking garages and covered driveways. In areas with no view to satellites, the positions are incrementally calculated from the travelled distance and measured heading. Once the satellites are visible again, the GPS receiver with its fast reacquisition time resumes GPS navigation immediately. In areas with poor GPS reception, e.g. city canyons, a weighted mix of GPS and sensor information is used for accurate navigation. This is particularly useful to eliminate abrupt position jumps due to multipath effects. The 100% navigation coverage provided here meets the stringent requirements for uninterrupted fleet management, reliable navigation, asset tracking, homeland security and highly flexible GPS-enabled road pricing systems.

Just like TIM-LP, -LF and -LC, the TIM-LR is powered by the 16-channel, low-power ANTARIS® chipset and has the same superior GPS performance: 2.5m CEP accuracy, 34 second cold start, 3.5 second hot start, WAAS/EGNOS support and high sensitivity reaching -150 dBm without a compromise in overall performance.
