Frequently Asked Questions: FAQ about GPS

Topic

 17What's the X/Y/Z Coordinate system?

What's the X/Y/Z Coordinate system?

Question:

What's the coordinate system X-Y-Z? (Where do the axis X, Y and Z point to?)

Answer:

This X-Y-Z system is called 'ECEF' (Earth Centered, Earth Fixed). It is a metric system. (0,0,0) is at the center of the earth. One axis goes through the poles, the other two point to the equator. The coordinate system rotates with the earth. Calculating Latitude, Longitude and Altitude from ECEF (or vice versa) can be done easily. Algorithms can be found in literature.
