Frequently Asked Questions: FAQ about GPS

Topic

9What is GPS Time / TOW / WNO?

What is GPS Time / TOW / WNO?

Question:

We assume that a receiver reports time in GPS in GPS Notation (Time of Week "TOW", Week Number "WNO"). Is it possible to convert this to UTC?

Answer:

The GPS receiver reports in TOW and WNO. Conversion to UTC is done by adjusting the leap seconds (which is a correction term that is also transmitted by the GPS receiver). When converting to Date and Time, care must be taken to handle the Week number roll over correctly.
